Pure Force the Beginning is coming to Tinley Park, Illinois on January 6, 2006 at the Holiday Inn Select Tinley Convention Center. The show features 15 sanctioned IKF Kickboxing and ISCF Mixed Martial Arts bouts.

Pure Force will feature fighters from top gyms all over the Midwest including: HCX Mixed Martial Arts/IL, Team Toro/IL, Peoria Athletic Club/IL, Minnesota Martial Arts Academy/MN, Warrior Way/MI, Team Lucky Strike/WI, Olympic Arena/IL, Southside Dojo/MI, Torres Martial Arts/IN, and many more.

Additional live entertainment to include a performance by DJ Aftermath and the Girls of Standing Ground live.

The Pro MMA Main Event bout will be between Billy Stamp (Right) of Peoria Athletic Club in Southern Illinois and Andre Garcia of Warrior Way in Detroit Michigan.

Billy has been a very active fighter with 7 fights this year and has a professional record of 4-4-1. Andre Garcia is out of Warrior Way in Michigan. Andre has made two appearances in King of the Cage (KOTC), of which one was in Australia. He is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt and a Black Belt in Sambo.

More Truths Be Told About
Amateur MMA, Oklahoma & UFC!
- Will Amateur MMA Be BANNED Nationwide? -

On November 9th we posted an article entitled, "State Commissions Not Fond Of MMA... Except UFC, UFC Wins The Eyes Of State Commissions... And The $$ They Can Make!"

The article focused on some comments made by UFC President Dana White (Left) about amateur MMA where White said, "There is no such thing as amateur MMA." This info was past on to us from a private source that had a private DVD given to members of various State Boxing Commissions at the ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) meeting this past July 27th. However, although the source was trustworthy, we never had the chance to view the entire presentation. Well... Today we did.

If you remember in the November 9th article, we touched basis how a promoter out of Oklahoma named Dale Cook (Left) got Amateur MMA BANNED there. After ISCF President Steve Fossum made several trips to Oklahoma to discuss MMA with their commission, the one trip he made on the day they were suppose to have their vote, there was not enough commission members to hold a forum to vote for or against it. Strange? We thought so. So that trip was wasted.

When the next meeting date was announced, Fossum had other plans, and to our surprise, the Commission voted down Amateur MMA. On July 6th, we asked the Chief Commissioner for the State of Oklahoma, Joe Miller why Amateur MMA in Oklahoma would not be allowed. Miller responded on July 7th, stating the key reason was Cook's accusations about the ISCF allowing Pros to fight amateurs. Cook told the Commission members that two fighters (Camron Smith and Ncik Nyguen had fought as Professional MMA Fighters. However, if those of the Commission would have taken an extra step and researched this, they would have discovered that Cook LIED about these fighters. That neither Smith or Nyguen had ever fought as a Professional MMA fighter. See for yourself, by clicking Here for Camron Smith and Here for Ncik Nyguen.

As you might remember, in addition, Cook said, and we quote, "Amateur competition and experience is the training you do in the gym, when you fight, it's always pro." Miller admitted he never had the opportunity to check if Cooks claims were accurate or not. However, he allowed the other Commission members to believe they were by not questioning his accusations. Miller also said he spoke with Tim Lueckenhoff, Director of the State of Missouri and President of the ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) Miller said Lueckenhoff told him he was having a lot of problems with this going on in Missouri and that Missouri was going to write legislation to ban amateur MMA. Miller told us, "My opinion and my opinion only was that the Commission was leaning towards approval of the ISCF until they heard the claims of professionals fighting on amateur cards. I haven't formed my opinion yet due to the fact that I haven't had the opportunity to fully investigate the going on in the State of Missouri."

Along with our explanation above about the two fighters Cook claimed were professional, we also went into the Missouri issue. In Missouri, there was an event where professional MMA fighters fought Amateurs. However, it was not an ISCF sanctioned event. it was a "SHOOTO" sanctioned event. in fact, when the Shooto Representative, Johnny Walls, was called on it, he basically said on a public message board, "Oh well, it happens all the time, so what..." Because of Shooto's reckless actions, the problem has found it's way to the ISCF. An organization that DOES NOT allow Amateurs to fight Professionals, and despite Dana White and Dale Cook's claims,

"THERE ARE AMATEUR MMA FIGHTERS!

Because of Cook's false claims, and the Oklahoma Commission's failure to confirm or deny them, Oklahoma Commission members Dr. Karl Sauer, Dr. Martin Tippie, Danny Hodge, Mike Bower, Glen Vernnon and Kelly Burden all voted NO, to allow amateur MMA in Oklahoma. Were these guys all swayed by Cooks lies? We already mentioned Cooks hidden agenda. He wanted to be the sole promoter in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cook was the main force behind the push to assure the State Commission in Oklahoma would not allow Amateur MMA in his State, and by doing so, he kept the smaller, amateur promoters out of business against him and assured his Pro Promotions to succeed.

As we mentioned in our previous article in November, at the July 27th ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) Meeting in Las Vegas, someone asked White about amateur MMA... it was, Joe Miller of the Oklahoma State Boxing Commission. Here is "Exactly" how that conversation went:

Joe Miller - To Dana White: "What is your feeling on Amateur Mixed Martial Arts, I gota make a decision sometime next legislative session what to do with it."
Dana White: "In my opinion?"
Miller: "In your opinion."
White: "There's no such thing as amateur mixed martial arts."
White later continued: "There are no amateurs."

White also went on to say that John Brown, owner of Ringside and Sports Combat Intl has been talking about spearheading an amateur program for mixed martial arts. In other words, Brown would like to go in to the "Sanctioning Business" or for a better choice of words, he wants to be the USA Boxing of Amateur MMA...

So, will Miller and the voting Commission of Oklahoma again be swayed by the voice of another "AGAIN?" Someone who obviously does NOT know about the many "AMATEUR" MMA fighters in North America today? Although "Thousands" of these AMATEUR MMA fighters fill White and his UFC's partners pockets with their PPV Buys and UFC Tickets, isn't it a bit strange that White makes a public statement saying, "There are no Amateur MMA Fighters!"

We wonder now what the State of Oklahoma will do, as other states. Will they side with a LEGIT Sanctioning body such as the ISCF, or will they BAN Amateur MMA because of the words of those like Cook and White or the reckless actions of groups like Shooto as well as what ISKA-IFC has done in states like Colorado? What about WKA's MMA sanctioning? Same story... It's OK for amateurs to fight pros? Needless to say, whatever their decisions, the State Commissions need to take a closer look AT THE RIGHT TARGET. As the saying goes, "If it's not broke, why fix it?" And the TRUTH here is, the ISCF continues to operate a fair and LEGIT Sanctioning body for MMA. The focus needs to be put on all these other "So Called" MMA sanctioning bodies. For if anything should be banned, it's their right to sanction amateur MMA, and maybe even Pro MMA. Because from our research, paying a sanctioning fee to those "Other" letters does NOT mean someone is present at their event, sanctioning their event with rules, regulations and safety in mind. It just means you paid a fee to do whatever you want to...

The ISCF Advisory Board

The ISCF would like to welcome Mr. Paul Creighton (Right) to the ISCF Advisory Board. Mr. Creighton is a BJJ Black Belt and UFC veteran who owns a growing MMA and BJJ school in the Metro-Atlanta Georgia area. He is an avid supporter of ISCF events in the Georgia area and possesses an unblemished reputation as a member of the martial sports community.

Paul has studied Martial Arts since the age of five. A Sport Jiu-jitsu Middleweight World Champion in 2000, he was the United States Sport Jujitsu team captain in 1998 and 2000, and a member of the three-time World Champion USA Sport Jujitsu team. As a competitive wrestler in high school and college, he compiled a 134-16-1 (win-loss-tie) record and was a Junior Olympic Gold Medalist. He received his Bachelors Degree in Health/Science from SUNY Brockport in New York and his Masters Degree in Health and Physical Education from Radford University in Radford, Virginia. His training covers various styles of Martial Arts. He was awarded his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Renzo Gracie. He has also earned Black Belts in Goshin Jutsu Karate, Judo, and Japanese Jujitsu. Since the mid-1990s, he has studied Brazilian Jiujitsu under the guidance of Renzo Gracie. Currently, Paul is an instructor under Renzo Gracie and owns the Creighton Mixed Martial Arts Academy located in Duluth, Georgia, USA.

The members of the ISCF Advisory Board are not paid members or employees of the ISCF or IKF. The ISCF established the Advisory Board to give recognition to those individuals who have helped and those who continue to help grow the ISCF Organization as well as progress the growth of MMA in their work. Board members do not make final decisions in ISCF Title bouts, Sanctioning or event Scheduling. Their efforts are to give advise when and where needed to improve the work of the ISCF. They are often used as ISCF event officials due to their vast knowledge in the sport of MMA. Yes, unlike some Boxing Commissions around the USA, our ISCF Board members "Really DO Know the sport of MMA!" Many Boxing commission board members are government appointed officials that know little if anything about the sport of Boxing. The ISCF Advisory Board is comprised of individuals who have a vast amount of knowledge in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. This is "EXACTLY" why we seek them to advise the growth and efforts of the ISCF, and more so, why this board is called an "Advisory" board, and not a "Board of Directors."

Full Contact Fighter's Database
Replaces
Sherdog In ISCF Rankings

Have any of you been to the rankings pages yet? If not, you need to take a peek (Pro Mens - Amateur Mens). We have spent the last several weeks linking EVERY Amateur and professional fighter to the "Full Contact Fighter" database.

FC Fighter beat out Sherdog's data base due to the detail of their listings. however, some fighters may still have a Sherdog link if the records are not equal to those in the FC Fighter Database. Over the past few years, only the Pro fighters in the ISCF were linked to a fighters database, which was Sherdog.com. However as our sport grows and the increase in AMATEUR competition grew, we needed a more detailed database that separated fighters amateur background from their professional one, which is why FC Fighter has become the official fighters database of the ISCF.

The ISCF pro and Amateur Woman's rankings will be adjusted sometime this week. Something to be aware of is that some fighters in the FC Fighter database have never fought as a professional, but for whatever reason, one or some of their bouts were listed as professional bouts.

December 2nd - Kennesaw, Georgia, USA

ISCF Georgia, USA: Despite numerous last minute cancellations and one fighter showing up but then vanishing come fight time, the KnuckleUp promoters were able to put together seven good bouts for the faithful at the Cowboys venue, in Kennesaw, Georgia. Here are the nights results below.

  1. Amateur Light Heavyweight MMA: Joel Negron (Velocity, 0-1) vs. Karl Chapman (Velocity, 0-0)
    After dominating Round 1 Negron succumbed to the reverse triangle early in the second round.
    Winner: Chapman at 1:48 of round 2 via tap out from reverse triangle choke.
  2. Amateur Welterweight MMA: C.J. Jordan (Velocity, 0-0) vs. Anthony Henry (Velocity, 0-0)
    Henry won the first round, but had no gas left in the 2nd.
    Winner: C.J. Jordan at 46 seconds of round 2 from tap out due to exhaustion.
  3. Amateur Lightheavyweight MMA: David Boles (United/Velocity, 1-0) vs. Danny Kiser (unattached, 0-1)
    Boles opened up with a knee, but the powerful Kiser took him down and was pulled into Boles' guard. Kiser powered out of a couple of armbar attempts before being caught in a triangle.
    Winner: Boles at 3:13 of round 1 by tap out from triangle choke.
  4. Amateur Welterweight MMA: Jeff Power (Velocity, 0-0) vs. Carlton Spaulding (Eagle/Velocity, 1-0)
    Power opened with a deep shot, but Spaulding sprawled came back up into the clinch and landed some solid knees. Power separated and then shot a double leg to Spaulding's guard. he passed to he side, but Spaulding worked into half-guard where the fighters exchanged strikes at the round's end. Round 2 began with a deep double and slam by Power. Spaulding escapes and stands up. He then takes Power down and gets his back, from there Spaulding lands repeated strikes.
    Winner: Spaulding at 58 seconds of round 2 due to referee stoppage from strikes.
  5. Amateur Lightweight MMA: John Trent (Velocity, 1-1) vs. Donnie Blue (Team Praxis, 2-0)
    Trent opened up with a crowd pleasing spinning back kick but Blue took his time and executed a lateral drop to the side of Trent. From there Blue attained the back and sunk in the choke.
    Winner: Blue at 2:37 of round 1 via rear naked choke.
  6. Amateur Lightweight MMA: Larry Landry (Velocity, 1-1) vs. Jeff Powell (Blaylock's imb, 0-1)
    One of the fights of the night, Landry dominated the takedowns and held Powell down, but Powell refused to quit and landed the more telling strikes, including some powerful knees, and went for numerous submissions.
    Winner: Powell by split decision.
  7. Pro Heavyweight MMA: Fabio Costa (Velocity, 0-0) vs. Muta Champion (Unattached, 1-0)
    Perhaps one of the more bizarre occurrences of the night, Champion showed up, and underwent physical and weigh-in, only to be nowhere to be found when he was called to the ring…Muta = NO CHAMPION! Champion's one win came back in 1999 against a first time fighter names Julio Dudley. Neither fighter has fought since their bout...
  8. Pro Middleweight MMA: Franz Mendez (Velocity, 2-2) vs. Chatt Lavendar (Blaylock's imb, 7-5)
    Mendez opens up with a high kick and moves in for the clinch. He takes Lavender down and lands in his guard. Mendez lands a couple of hard rights from the guard and then passes to side. Mendez gets the back and sinks the choke. The veteran Lavender announced his retirement after the bout.
    Winner: Mendez at 2:23 of round 1 via tap out, rear naked choke.

November 25, 2005 - CANADA

ISCF British Columbia, Canada: Once again, another exciting NFC event at the Squamish Nations Rec Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Tim Thurston of the Revolution Fight Team out of Surrey, BC, Canada defeated Myles Merola of the Suitela Gym, also out of Surrey, BC, Canada by submission from punches at :50 of Round 3. The win gave Thurston the ISCF Pro Welterweight British Columbia Title.

As an MMA fighter Thurston has excelled with an MMA record of 3-0. He was an accomplished amateur boxer as a 3 time Golden Glove Boxing Champion, 3 time Diamond Belt Champion, 2 time Silver Glove Champion and the NAC Middleweight Champion but as a Pro boxer he did not do as well, retiring back in 1998 with a pro record of 0-2.

Here are the nights results below.

  1. Costa Rojas defeated Keith Davis by TKO referee stoppage from punches at 1:58 of Round 1.
  2. Marcus "Lelo" Aurelio defeated Kevin Leclair by KO at 2:07 of Round 2

November 26th, 2005 - Kansas City, Missouri, USA

By ISCF Event Representative Chuck Wolfe: This event was top notch! With 13 fights plus a good location, sell out crowd and lots of action all equal A Great night of MMA at The Three Trails Center in South Kansas City. Over 3,000 people watched at Cageside and on closed circuit TV on this warm Saturday night in the Midwest. The action wasn't warm, it was HOT, very HOT from the start. Here are the nights results below.

  1. Ray Yawnce (178) of Independence MO. vs Mike Mina (184) of K2L.
    Mina came out strong landing 2 big right hands but he didn't keep his own hands up he got caught with a overhand right from Yawnce forcing Referee Rob Kimmons to stop the fight. Winner by KO in just : 45 seconds of round one Ray Yawnce.
  2. Chris Page (155) of Dog Town vs Daniel Young (155) of CQC.
    This one went to the ground quick. Page got the advantage early winning by Tap Out at 1:04 of the 1st round.
  3. Justin Niedens (160) of the Caveman Crew vs Billy Crum (152) of Team Dynamite.
    Niedens needed just 1:32 of round one to secure a Arm Bar and win by Tap Out over Crum.
  4. Wes Miller (152) of the Caveman Crew vs Matt Dukes of Team Dynamite.
    Dukes handled Miller from the start winning by Tap Out at 1:23 of the first round.
  5. Scott Hablin (236) of the Caveman Crew vs Matt Otto (235) of Team AJJ.
    The fist minute was all stand up. With both fighters landing some blows. However as soon as they went to the ground Hablin secured the choke. Winner by Tap Out at 1:22 of the first Scott Hablin.
  6. Eric Farmer (175) of the Caveman Crew vs Don "Dean" Johnston (175) of Team Dynamite.
    These guys hooked it up from the start with Farmer gaining what looked to be some advantage. Johnston showed some poise and weathered the storm very well. Winner by Tap Out at 3:35 of the first round Don "Dean" Johnston.
  7. Chris Davis (174) of the Caveman Crew vs Shawn Hinkly (170) of Team Galen. This one did not take long. Winner by Tap Out at just :13 seconds of round one Chris Davis.
  8. Jimmy Haynes (151) of the Caveman Crew vs Troy Talaveria (153) of K2L.
    This was a good match while it lasted. Both fighters showed good skill. Talaveria proved to be to much for Haynes. Winner by Tap Out at 2:06 of the first round Troy Talaveria.
  9. Jason Teeman (199) of the Caveman Crew vs Brandon Simmons of K2L.
    Teeman started very fast striking fist then taking Simmons to the ground. Winner by Tap Out at just :39 seconds of the first round Jason Teeman.
  10. Rob Lilly (170) of Team AJJ vs Billy Carey (170) of K2L.
    This was one of the better match ups of the night. Both fighters blazed thru the first Round. Lilly seemed to have a advantage on the ground and Carey had the advantage standing up. After a very close first round Lilly took the high ground winning by TKO at 1:01 of the second round.
  11. Leo Plu (192) of the Caveman Crew vs Josh Carney of K2L.
    For the first two an a half minutes it looked as though Plu had taken the wrong fight. Out of no were Plu secured a good figure four ankle lock on Carney. Winner by Tap Out at 3:32 of the first round Leo Plu.
  12. Erik Akin (133) of the Caveman Crew vs Cody Bell (133) of Team Dynamite.
    This was the fight of the night. these guys went after each other for all three rounds. This was a very close fight. Winner by Majority Decision 29-28 28-29 30-27 Erik Akin.
  13. Crowd favorite Matt Cox (225) of Team AJJ vs Cory Relling of Brad Jones.
    As the Main Event the fans saw Cox dominate Relling securing a figure four wrist lock. Winner Cox by Tap Out at 1:33 of the first round .

RESULTS FROM THE
MIDWEST FIGHT FEST
November 12th, St Louis, Missouri, USA

IKF & ISCF St. Louis, Missouri, USA: As the 2005 year comes to close, Shamrock Promotions has once again given fight fans another great year of fights.

This past Saturday night Shamrock Promotions brought a night of excitement to South Broadway Athletic Club. The Midwest Fight Fest hosted 4 boxing, 1 kickboxing, and 6 NHB fights All were packed full of action. As the competition gets harder so does the ability to find fighters. Shamrock Promotions brought fighters from North Carolina, New York, Chicago, Memphis, Virginia, Kansas, and Chicago. All of these fighters had nothing but great things to say about the event. This night was full of action and surprises.

During one of the intermissions President and CEO Jesse Finney (R) announced that 3 time UFC Veteran and Brazilian Jui Jitsu Specialist Steve Berger (L) will be joining Finney's Championship Kickboxing and Martial Arts. Berger brings a new dimension to the gym, and will be part of making Finney's an all around gym.

This may have been the last we see of another great amateur. Kevin Engel may have fought his last fight as an amateur. Rumors have been circulating that the former Multi Time IKF US Nationals Champion and Current Golden Gloves Champion, may be turning pro in early 2006. In his "possible" last amateur fight he went up against Joel Godfree, from Raleigh, North Carolina in an amateur Boxing match. This match was all everyone thought it would be… two powerful and quick punchers facing off. Both fighters fought hard for four rounds and in the end, Godfree won on a split decision.

Others in action were Finney's own Timmy Connors. Timmy is coming off a great showing at the 2005 IKF North American Tournament. On the opening day of prelims Conners first defeated Rolando Luna of, Dalton, Georgia by unanimous decision and then defeated Chris Cichon of Minneapolis, Minnesota by unanimous decision to move to the Championship bout on Sunday. There he won the Full Contact Rules Super Welterweight Title with a victory over Jared Warren of Brandon, Florida, USA by unanimous decision 30-27 on all 3 judges cards. Conners has been continuing his dominance in the Amateur boxing scene where he was on this night. in his bout he defeated Chrishawn Collier of St. Louis, MO by decision.

Titus Taylor, a former NCAA National Wrestling Champion, has recently joined Finney's to increase his standup and work on submissions. Combining his great wrestling ability with the standup and ground from Finney's Taylor will be one to watch for in the future. Here are all the nights results below.

2005 Shidokan
Team USA Championships

The Shidokan exploded in Atlanta GA for the second time on Friday night, November 11 at the Dekalb Event Center. This years tournament featured three 4 man tournaments: Lightweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight. The competitors fought under Triathlon rules (one 3 minute round of Bare Knuckle Karate, one 3 minute round of Thai Boxing, and one 3 minute round of Mixed Martial Arts). Fighters representing various states from around the country fought to determine who would make up Team USA to fight in the World Open on December 3 in Chicago. Retired Team USA Champion and Two Time World Shidokan Champion Richard Trammell (Left) put on his promoter hat again to bring the "Triathlon of Martial Arts" to the South. This event was co-sanctioned by the ISCF.

In the Lightweight Semi-finals, 2004 Team USA Welterweight Champion Raphael Assuncao of Atlanta, defeated first timer Phillip Peterson, of Birmingham, AL. Peterson came back strong after some strong takedowns and a standing 8 count. In round three Assuncao sunk in the rear naked choke for a tap. In the second Semi-final match, Mushin Corbrey of Hilton Head, SC defeated Mike Smiley of Pittsburgh, PA by TKO in round two of kickboxing round.

In the Middleweight Semi-finals, 2001 Team USA Champion, UFC, KOTC, and WEC veteran, Shonnie "Mr. International" Carter (Chicago, IL) took on Danny Abbdi of Orlando FL. Abbdi landed numerous round kicks during the karate round. In round two Carter started to rally back with strong punches. In round three Carter took Abbdi down and rained down punches to get a decision win. In match two of the Middleweights, 2004 Team USA and World Open Semi-finalist, David Hulett (Birmingham, AL) took on local fighter Joe Merritt. Merrit dominated the kickboxing rounds with powerful right hands, but Hulett took it and dished it out as well. In the grappling round, the two went to the mat where Hulett won a battle of leg locks and got the tap out victory via heel hook submission.

In the Heavyweight Semi-finals, 2001 Team USA Superheavyweight Champion, John Leblanc defeated Kevin Brooks of Rex, GA by TKO in round two. Brad Baker of Gainesville GA defeated Peter Poeanru in round two with a hard knee to the body earning a TKO victory.

In the Lightweight finals, Mushin Corbrey and Raphael Assuncao put on an awesome display of technique and power as the two fought hard from beginning to end. In round one Corbrey attacked with hard low kicks and body punches, Assuncao answered back with strong kicks and knees and a powerful takedown. In round two Corbrey pressed the action more and showed his impressive boxing style land hard left hooks and right hands. In round 3 Assuncao got the takedown Corbrey attacked from the bottom looking for submissions. Assuncao controlled this round but it wasn't enough to get the decision. Corbrey's early aggression earned him his first Team USA Lightweight Championship.

In the Middleweight finals, Shonnie Carter came out hard and aggressive and dominated rounds one and two against David Hulett. Carter landed strong punches as he did in the Semi-finals against Abbdi. In the final round Carter took Hulett down. Hulett immediately got Carter in his guard and went for the Kimura arm lock. Carter, known for being unorthodox, tried to roll out of the submission. This proved to be a mistake as he gave Hulett the added leverage to get the tap out. Hulett defeated the veteran and earned the Team USA Middleweight title.

In the Heavyweight finals, Brad Baker pressed the action against John Leblanc all three rounds. Leblanc laid back during the Karate and Kickboxing rounds, and tried to win the match in round three. Leblanc got the takedown and attempted key locks twice. in the final seconds of the MMA round he went for the arm bar. Even with no previous ground experience, the kicboxer, Baker had cross trained enough to be able to protect him self. With the fights being 3 rounds (scored on a 10 point must system), it showed that a fighter can't give rounds one and two and rely on the last round to win the fight.

Tonight, November 11th in Atlanta Georgia, Atlanta Shidokan will Present the SHIDOKAN TEAM USA CHAMPIONSHIPS at the Dekalb Center. The event will begin at 7:PM.

The SHIDOKAN style of competition is an exciting format to watch. Each match will consists of: 1, 3 minute round of karate (punches only to the body), 1, 3 minute round of kickboxing (10 oz gloves, punches to head allowed) and 1, 3 minute round of grappling (punches to head on ground only) No elbows allowed to the head at any point (only body). In the first 2 rounds (karate and kickboxing), a 3 second clinch is allowed.

TEXAS
SHUTS DOWN AMATEURS!

Well the selection process for the 2006 IKF NAC Tournament narrowed down a bit today. With proposals from Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Corpus Christi for the 2006 NAC tournament, all will now be tossed aside thanks to some MMA Promoters in the State of Texas, the IKF will just have to cross Texas off the list for a potential location for the 2006 IKF North American Amateur Kickboxing Tournament.

However, what we discovered was actually old news since it actually took place on September 1st of this year. It was reported to us today by the Texas State Commission that as of September 1st, Texas banned all amateur competition until their new rules and regulations become in place on January 1st, 2006. These new rules and regulations will surly not help amateur kickboxing or mma in Texas. Some of the new rules will make it very hard for an "Amateur" promoter to hold events there.

From what we determined, it was promoters "Claiming" to hold amateur MMA shows that brought about this change. These so called amateur mma events were promoters who wanted to bypass all the State Pro Event Commission fees. However, these amateur mma promoters still paid their fighters a purse, just like pros. Apparently amateur toughman style events were guilty of the same thing. Too bad that kickboxing had to be lumped in with the bad actions of these Illegal Texas MMA promoters since amateur kickboxing in the state was never at fault.

Some of the new rules and regulations will soon include the requirement of a $15,000 security bond, a payment to the commission of 3% of the events gross gate for their event tax. Also, the promoter company needs to be a licensed, non profit organization. There are many other new requirements that will, as we said, make promoting amateur events in Texas very expensive. Needless to say, while organizations such as the ISCF and our sister organization for Kickboxing, the IKF(International Kickboxing Federation) are taking a step forward to promote amateur sports, it appears to us, Texas is taking yet another step backwards.

State Commissions
Not Fond Of MMA... Except UFC

UFC Wins The Eyes Of State Commissions... And The $$ They Can Make!

Let us add something that may have brought attention to the Texas issue explained above. Something to note, what happened in Texas may soon be coming to your state too, so beware. At the last ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) meeting held in Las Vegas, Nevada, this past July, MMA was suppose to be a focused point of discussion.

However, instead of having this meeting at a neutral commission location, the UFC hosted a special session that included several commissioners at their facility to give a presentation on "UFC" MMA. During the sessions it appeared clear that Dana White, (Below Left) President of the wanted to focus the commissioners on the "UFC" and not just "ANY" MMA such as maybe ISCF Sanctioned MMA.

White went on to fed the state commission participants at the meeting the phrase, "There is no such thing as amateur MMA." And guess what, "MANY believed him!"

So what's up? Does the UFC want to do away with all "AMATEUR" MMA? This sounds like Promoter Dale Cook (Right) out of Oklahoma who got Amateur MMA BANNED there. Cook said, and we quote, "Amateur competition and experience is the training you do in the gym, when you fight, it's always pro." What kind of BS is that?

Are people like White and Cook "REALLY FOR" the sport or do they each have their own hidden agenda? We KNOW Cook had his. He was the sole promoter in Tulsa, Oklahoma until someone new wanted to do amateur MMA. Cook made sure to put a stop to it and have Amateur MMA Banned in the State. This assured his Pro Promotions to succeed.

As for White's efforts in hosting an MMA presentation at his Las Vegas facility... Maybe there is something more here too because recently we have been told that some states are now looking to BAN ALL AMATEUR MMA and only allow "UFC" events in their state... Did White pitch this to the commissioners in Vegas? That there is only ONE MMA, and it's UFC? Lets hope this was not the case, especially for all of us UFC fans.

It's true we have all admired UFC and their work for years. They have truly done great things for the sport as far as exposure and growth. They have become, "The Sport" all of their own. A powerhouse with name branding power and plenty of $$ to further their causes, whatever they may be. This includes in as well as OUT of the ring. This of course brings us to the questions, "What has been going on behind closed doors? What do they have planned for their future? Are they really now looking to hurt the very people who have supported them and brought them their greatness and financial rewards?"

Lets not forget that UFC claims to have the "Copyright" to the use of an OCTAGON cage for ANY MMA event. According to UFC, ANY promoter using an Octagon cage is demanded to pay the a minimum of $1,000.00 license fee for small events and the fee goes up from there, depending on the size of the event... Here is what they said, in their own words:

In reference to your inquiry in the attached electronic mail, there is substantial legal authority, both statutory and in case law, for the specific claims made on behalf of Zuffa, LLC ("Zuffa") in my letter to Mr. xxxxxx regarding his planned use of an octagon in the October xxx xxxxxxxx event.

First, as an attachment to the September 13th letter, enclosed was a copy of Zuffa's Federal Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (Reg. No. 2098577) of the octagon design mark with respect to entertainment in the nature of "multi-disciplined fighting competitions" (International Class 41). Under Federal law - specifically the Lanham Act (15 U.S.C. 1057), this registration is prima facie evidence of the mark's validity and serves as constructive notice that the registrant (Zuffa) can prevent a person or entity from infringing on its trademark by using such mark or any format of the mark confusingly similar thereto in connection with similar goods and services (in this case - mixed martial arts events).

Second, Zuffa has filed Section 8 & 15 Declarations with respect to the mark which were acknowledged and accepted by the U.S.P.T.O in 2003. Pursuant to 15 U.S.C. 1065, Zuffa's octagon mark has thereby become "incontestable" under the Lanham Act, meaning that Zuffa's octagon mark registration cannot be challenged on the basis of prior use or descriptiveness.

Third, regarding your inquiry specifically for "case law" (which frankly is unnecessary in view of Zuffa's enforceable rights under the Lanham Act), we refer you to the matter of Bam! Entertainment Inc. v. Zuffa, LLC (Case No. C01-21207PVT/ADR; U.S. Dist. Ct., N. Dist. of California, 2002), in which the Federal District Court approved Zuffa's stipulated dismissal of the case pursuant to which Bam! "hereby acknowledge[d] the validity of Zuffa's trademark and trade dress rights in Zuffa's octagon-shaped fighting ring, and ... [Bam!] agree[d] that it shall not in the future challenge the validity of those rights". Furthermore, in the dismissal, Bam! was specifically required to "not use or depict a ring which is octagonal, or which appears to be or is confusingly similar to an octagonal ring" in the future.

It is fundamental that, based on substantial statutory and case law in favor of Zuffa, any party desiring to use an octagon-shaped fighting enclosure in an MMA event in the U.S. must either (a) enter into a license agreement with Zuffa authorizing such use on terms satisfactory to Zuffa or (b) simply refrain from using the octagon or any other design confusingly similar thereto. Zuffa takes its intellectual property rights very seriously and vigorously enforces such rights as it is required to do by law.

All this makes us pause and wonder what is in store for the future of all AMATEUR fight sports in America. Will the state commissions move forward to regulate them so much that it will become too costly for the Amateur fight promoter? Is this a move by "Boxing" to do away with ALL their competition (Kickboxing & MMA). Or is there something more to all of this we have yet to see? Whatever it is, one things for sure... Amateur Kickboxing in Texas is now history. So we will get back to the decision making process for this years 2006 IKF North American Classic Amateur Kickboxing Tournament location, which we hope to have an answer for by December 1st... Lets hope we make our own deadline...
